What is Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that has evolved over centuries to become the fastest-growing martial art today. It was originally developed in Japan and translates to “The Gentle Art”. Primarily developed for self-defense, Jiu Jitsu utilizes leverage, timing, mobility, and pressure over sheer size and strength, giving the smaller opponent the advantage.

How it works

In the art of Jiu Jitsu, there are no strikes. With the efficient use of movements while applying joint locks, chokes, and pressure, an opponent can be rendered immobile through pinning (holding an opponent down), broken limbs (by joint locks), or unconsciousness (by applying a choke that restricts blood flow). While training Jiu Jitsu, athletes “tap” to these attacks in order to avoid injury. This “tapping out” method of training allows students to regularly practice at a high physical intensity without being injured. This makes Jiu Jitsu a great way to stay in shape while learning to defend oneself.

A little history

Having been brought to Brazil in the early 1900s, Jiu Jitsu soon made its way to the rest of the world, eventually becoming a widely practiced sport and merging with those who practice mixed martial arts competitions. It was initially introduced to the United States by the infamous Gracie family. The Gracie’s perfected Jiu Jitsu through no-holds-barred fighting and then showcased their art in the “Ultimate Fighting Championships”. Today, Jiu Jitsu has become a staple in every fight academy. With its efficacy in ground tactics, it has grown into an intricate web of endless possibilities within a match.

What can you use it for?

Jiu Jitsu is a hobby, a competitive sport, and a lifestyle to most who practice it. Whether you are in it to compete in the sport aspect, want to learn self-defense, or just want to lose weight and stay in shape, come try a free class and see for yourself why so many have chosen the art of Jiu Jitsu as a lifestyle.
